Songpa District (Korean: 송파구; RR: Songpa-gu) is one of the 25 districts of Seoul, bordering Gangdong and Hanam to the east, Gangnam to the west, Seongnam to the south, and Gwangjin to the north across the Han River.

Description[]

The flag of Songpa District is a white background with the district's logo on the left, with two texts on the right that read "송파구" and "SONGPA-GU" both in green.

Symbolism[]

The logo features the shape of a pine tree and a pine cone, reflecting the meaning of Songpa-gu, which translates to a hill filled with many pine trees. The design incorporates the shape of "ㅅ" (siot), symbolizing both Seoul and Songpa-gu, along with an arrow shape that represents the aspiration to reach greater heights. The green color at the top of the logo represents the color of pine leaves, signifying a city with a healthy living environment and a clear atmosphere where pine trees thrive even above the clouds. The ochre color at the bottom reflects Songpa-gu's rich history, highlighting the importance of the Baekje period, which symbolizes strength and longevity, much like the steadfast pine trees.

Historical Flags[]

First flag (1995 - November 16, 2006)[]

The first flag of Songpa District is a white background with the district's logo used from 1995 to November 16, 2006, in the center. The oval shape gradually transforms into a representation of a pine tree, taking on a three-dimensional and dynamic form. This change reflects the ongoing development of Songpa-gu as an eco-friendly city. The design symbolizes Songpa-gu as a vibrant, dynamic, and prosperous area, depicted in the form of a water column.

Additionally, the five circles that create the pine tree represent the Olympic rings, highlighting the local pride in having hosted the Olympic Games. The colors used are blue and green, which also convey the environmental message: “Songpa-gu, a clean and livable district.”

Second flag (November 17, 2006 - July 5, 2020)[]

The second flag of Songpa District is a white background with the district's logo used from November 17, 2006, to July 5, 2020, atop a text which reads "송파구" in dark brown. The previous logo has been slightly updated, notably the colors, and the lower part of the logo has been changed.

Third flag (July 6, 2020 - June 30, 2022)[]

The third flag of Songpa District is a white background with the district's logo used from July 6, 2020, to June 30, 2022, on the left, with two texts on the right that read "송파구" and "Songpa-gu" both in dark blue.

The "ㅅ" (siot) symbolizes Songpa-gu, a district that leads Seoul and prioritizes the well-being of its citizens while envisioning a promising future. The square shape that forms the basis of the siot represents the community's happiness, serving as the city's foundation. The image of two interconnected squares reflects the diverse population, rich culture, and unique stories of Songpa-gu, all coexisting in harmony. The siot that crosses the boundary between the two squares signifies a city that breaks through limitations and embodies creativity.

The sky blue used at the top symbolizes the sky of Songpa-gu, representing the vibrant lives of its citizens and the city's future. In contrast, the dark blue at the bottom symbolizes the solid land of Songpa-gu, portraying a city with a trustworthy foundation. However, there were some negative reviews, with critics noting that the design resembled the JB Financial Group or the Double A logo. Despite being used in various applications, the logo was ultimately replaced after two and a half years.
