South America is a continent entirely in the Western Hemisphere and mostly in the Southern Hemisphere, with a relatively small portion in the Northern Hemisphere at the northern tip of the continent. It can also be described as the southern subregion of a single continent called America.
Union of South American Nations[]
The Union of South American Nations (USAN), sometimes also referred to as the South American Union, abbreviated in Spanish as UNASUR and in Portuguese as UNASUL, is an intergovernmental regional organization, set up on the model of the European Union.
The organization officially uses an emblem composed of a blue background on which there is a series of white strokes in a shape similar to a whirlwind, resembling the shape of the continent. Unofficially, a proposal made by the then Peruvian president Alan García has been considered the emblem of the organization. This design was inspired by the APRA flag created by the Peruvian politician Victor Raúl Haya de la Torre in 1928.
