The flag of South Bend was first adopted in 1965, and was changed in 2016 after a flag redesign contest. The flag has been considered a worst to best flag as it ditched its seal on a background for a new and unique flag.

Current flag[]

The flag is divided between a white field and a yellow field. The two fields are separated by two S-shaped blue (or purple) lines with another white line in it. There is also a red 6-pointed star at the top of the white field. The blue and white lines represent the St. Joseph River that flows through the heart of the city. They also represent the city's physical and virtual connectivity, as well as its industrial routes. The 6 points on the star represent the city's six council districts.

First Flag (1965-2016)[]

The first flag of South Bend was designed in 1965. Like most city flags, it was a seal on a background flag. It was a yellow field with the seal in the middle. The seal has a blue border with white text. The seal has the name of the city curved from the 7:30 o'clock angle to the 4:30 o'clock angle. At the bottom is the year South Bend was fully incorporated as a city. In the middle is an American flag, with the city motto "Peace" in the middle of the flag pole. There are also yellow clouds and a sun at the bottom of the flag, with yellow rays coming from the sun.
