South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands is a British Overseas Territory in the southern Atlantic Ocean. It is also claimed by Argentina as part of the Tierra del Fuego province. Its flag is a Blue Ensign with the territory's coat of arms in the fly.
The coat of arms was granted in 1992. It consists of a green pile on blue and white lozenges, charged with two wavy stars (referencing the coat of arms of discoverer James Cook) and a British golden lion holding a torch. The supporters are an Antarctic fur seal and a macaroni penguin; the crest is a reindeer. The motto is "Leo terram propriam protegat" (Let the lion protect its own land).
