The green represents the land, the blue lines represent the Spokane River and Falls, the yellow sun represents the city's name, originally sp̓q̓n̓iʔ in the Salish language (meaning "sun"), and the indigenous Spokane people.

Third flag (1975-2021)[]
The flag is a white background with 2 diagonal stripes of green and red. On the blue side is a white circle fimbriated in black, with a yellow sun on it's top-right. Inside the circle are 4 figures, and on the top of them are the words "CHILDREN OF THE SUN", all in black. On the fly is the word "CITY OF SPOKANE" in black.

Spokane means “Children of the Sun”, or the “Sun People”, in the language of the Spokane tribe, from which the city derives its name.
