The flag of Transnistria was adopted in 1991, but was made official in 2000. It consists of a tricolor of red on top and bottom bars, with a green bar in the middle. This flag is almost Identical to the Flag of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic. The only difference is the shade of green is difference. It is also known for being the only sovereign entity in the world that still uses the hammer and sickle, Depside this, Transnistria is not a socialist state. Because of it's use of the hammer and sickle, the flag is banned in countries that have outlawed the use of communist symbolism. A simplified version of the flag is used without the hammer and sickle in order to get around these bans. This is also used as the civil flag of Transnistria. In 2017, a co-official flag was adopted which used the flag of Russia, with the only difference being that it has a ratio of 1:2.

2017 Flag redesign attempt[]

In 2017 Transnistria President Vadim Krasnoselsky proposed a redesign for the Transnistria flag, which would remove the hammer and sickle and replace it with a Double-headed Russian Eagle. It would also consist of the coat of arms of Moscow in the center of the eagle. The eagle would also be holding an imperial scepter in its left claw and an imperial orb in its right claw. On top, the eagle would be wearing three crowns connected by a ribbon, exactly like the coat of arms of Russia. This proposal was rejected, instead opting for a co-official flag in the design of the flag of Russia, with a proportion of 1:2.
