Introduction
In 2001, the NAVA (Northern American Vexillological Association) asked their members all around the world to give notes to rate each US state, federal district or territory flag, and each Canadian province or territory flag. More than half of them failed to reach only a standard 5.0 grade. After the survey, the only state that significantly changed its flag was Georgia, in the last position of the poll (with an unhonored 2.36 grade). More states should follow the example. Find out more at the 2001 NAVA survey page. |
What does "vexillology" mean?
"Study of flags", literally. Whitney Smith, co-founder of "scientific" study of flags, created this word in 1957. It comprises the term vexillum, the name of banners carried by Roman soldiers, and logos, which means "knowledge" or "science" in Greek.
About the wiki
Vexillology Wiki collects proposals for new flags of countries and their subdivisions, currently mainly for Northern America.
Things you can do:
- Submit flag designs (either your own or someone else's) by joining the wiki. If you are submitting someone else's design, make sure you have the right to do so, and remember to give due credit. See some guidelines at Vexillology Wiki:Images.
- Create new articles, or expand existing articles, with information on current and historical flags. You can use content from Wikipedia if you credit the Wikipedia authors using {{Wikipedia}}.
- Comment on flag proposals or on pages using the form at the bottom of each article, or the page's talk page for non-article pages. Either is linked next to the "Edit" button at the top of the page. Some articles have subpages for discussing proposals.
You do not need a Wikia account to edit the wiki, but your IP address will be revealed if you are not logged in, and unregistered users cannot upload files.
See the Community Portal for links to pages that provide help with editing, as well as a list of some useful special pages. Post general questions, ideas and comments about the wiki at either Vexillology Wiki talk:Community Portal or the forum.
